Gibson's Busch Classic by Bill Purdom

Bob Gibson’s regular-season numbers in 1968 were staggering: 22 wins against only nine losses; a microscopic 1.12 earned run average; 268 strikeouts; and an incredible 13 shutouts. So it came as little surprise when he continued to sizzle in Game 1 of the ‘68 World Series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Facing 31-game winner Denny McLain and the Detroit Tigers, the Cardinals’ flame-throwing right-hander simply dominated. It’s October 2, 1968, and Gibson has just blown a called third strike past Detroit slugger Willie Horton to wrap up the Cardinals’ 4-0 victory. It is Gibson’s World Series record 17th K of the day. The previous batter, Norm Cash, had been strikeout victim No. 16, enabling Gibson to break Sandy Koufax’ record of 15 Ks in the 1963 Series against the Yankees. Gibson allowed only five hits in the game, walked just one and fanned at least one batter in every inning, striking out the side in the second and ninth—truly one of the greatest performances in World Series history.

McGwire's 70th by Bill Purdom

What a blast! Sixty-nine minutes earlier, Mark McGwire had hit his 69th home run of the season. Now, with 46,110 fans standing and cheering at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the Cardinals slugger puts the finishing touch on a season for the ages. It’s September 27, 1998, and McGwire has just sent a pitch from the Expos’ rookie right-hander Carl Pavano over the leftfield wall for home run No. 70. The three-run, seventh-inning drive snaps a 3-3 tie and lifts St. Louis to a 6-3 season-ending victory. It is McGwire’s final at- bat of the year and caps a remarkable weekend that began with McGwire and Sammy Sosa of the Cubs tied at 66 in baseball’s greatest ever home run derby. McGwire took care of that with two homers on Saturday and two more on Sunday. I have no words to describe what he has done this season, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. He has given us moment after moment.

Sammy and Mac by Bill Purdom

Throughout a terrific stretch run during which two intensely competitive power hitters battled for baseball’s most coveted individual record, Sammy Sosa of the Cubs and Mark McGwire of the Cardinals displayed remarkable class. As fate would have it, McGwire was the first to tie Roger Maris’ record, belting his 61st homer against Sosa and the Cubs on September 7, 1998. As McGwire circled the bases at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Sosa, who had 58 homers at the time, applauded from his position in right field. Then, after emerging from the dugout for a curtain call, McGwire saluted his father, Maris’ children and Sosa. Later, after Sosa singled, he embraced the St. Louis first baseman. I told him congratulations, don’t go too far. Wait for Me. It was a friendly request by Sosa, who was listening before the game when McGwire said: Wouldn’t it be great if we just ended up tied? Sosa and McGwire actually were tied for the home run lead after play on Sept. 13 (62), Sept. 16 (63), Sept. 23 (65), and Sept. 25 (66), when Sosa actually held the lead for just under an hour.
