Long Gone Griffith by Bill Purdom
Long Gone Griffith
From your field level seat directly behind the third base dugout, you're watching a "fantasy" game between the Senators and the Yankees at the old Washington, DC, ballpark. You can see the bleachers in left, the scoreboard afixed to the towering right field wall and a section of the covered stands down the right field line. That's Mickey Mantle digging in at the plate and Yogi Berra in the on-deck circle for the Bombers. It was at Griffith, of course, that Mantle launched a monstrous, 565-foot home run off southpaw Chuck Stobbs on April 17, 1953. Two eras of Senators baseball are brought together here; the block "W" on the third baseman's uniform commemorating the franchise that moved to Minnesota, and the pennant in the foreground bringing to mind the club that moved to Texas.

Grand Old Griffith by Andy Jurinko
Grand Old Griffith
It's the Summer of '53 in Washington, DC. Steamy hot, as usual. The Senators entertaining the Boston Red Sox. Mickey Vernon is at bat for Washington. He'll go on to lead the American League in batting (.337) and doubles (43), but the Senators will finish well off the pace in the American League -- also as usual. Although it was a small ballpark (its capacity never exceeded 30,000), the dimensions of the playing field made Griffith a pitcher's dream. In 1953 the distance from home plate to the left field foul pole was a mere 405 feet. It was 421 feet to straightaway center and 320 feet down the rightfield line. The entire right side of the outfield was protected by a 30-foot high wall, similar to Fenway's Green Monster.
