County Stadium Classic by Andy Jurinko
It's October 7, 1957, Game 5 of the Yankees-Braves World Series at County Stadium in Milwaukee, and Joe Adcock has just pumped a two-out, sixth-inning single into right field, driving in Eddie Mathews from third base with the only run of the game. The hit, off Yankee southpaw Whitey Ford, is enough to give Milwaukee a 3-2 Series lead, an edge the Braves will relinquish in Game 6 before capturing the World Series with a Game 7 win at Yankee Stadium. It will be the Braves' only World Championship in Milwaukee. Left-hander Lew Burdette, the Braves' shutout winner in Game 5, came back on two days rest to zip the Bombers in Game 7. Incredibly, Burdette had earned a complete-game victory in Game 2. Translation: three complete-game wins and two shutouts for Burdette in eight days!
