Amazing Metrodome Catch by Bill Purdom
It’s October 26, 1991, Game 6 of the Fall Classic at the Metrodome in Minneapolis and No. 34 is climbing an invisible ladder to haul in a drive off the bat of Atlanta’s Ron Gant. The spectacular catch comes in the third inning with Terry Pendleton on first base and Minnesota leading 2-0. Minnesota had won the first two games of the series before dropping three straight in Atlanta. It’s a do-or-die game for Minnesota, and the team’s star centerfielder is up to the task — big time. Although Atlanta manages to rally and send the game into extra innings tied 3-3, No. 34 — who already has two RBIs — leads off the 11th by belting a solo homer off Charlie Leibrandt to win it 4-3. In Game 7 the next night, Jack Morris goes the distance to help set up Gene Larkin’s game-winning 10th-inning single. Minnesota wins 1-0. They are World Champions!
