Outside Wrigley Field by Thomas Kolendra

Fans in overcoats. Bunting. Box seats, $7.20. A World Series at Wrigley Field? You bet it is! It’s 1945. The Cubs vs the Detroit Tigers. Due to wartime travel restrictions, the first three games were played in Detroit, the Cubs winning Games 1 and 3. The Series then shifted to the Windy City, to the corner of Clark and Addison, where the Tigers roared back to take Games 4 and 5. The Cubs then forced a pivotal seventh game by notching an 8-7, 12-inning triumph in Game 6. Hank Borowy, who had pitched five innings as the starter in Game 5 and four innings of relief in Game 6, was the Cubs’ starter in Game 7. Three batters into the game (three singles and a run) he was lifted. The Tigers scored five first-inning runs and were never threatened, rolling to a 9-3 victory and the World Championship.

Wrigley Field Matinee by Bill Purdom

It's early June, 1957, on Chicago's North Side, the Cubs and the Milwaukee Braves playing under a delightfully sunny sky. You're on the aisle, in field level seats behind the third base dugout. Your view (from left to right) begins at the left-center field bleachers and sweeps past the scoreboard in center to the stands along the first base line. Apartment buildings are visible beyond the ivy-covered wall in right field. That's No. 44, Hammerin' Hank Aaron, at bat. Ernie Banks is at short. Night games at Wrigley are a long way off. Let's play two!
